Standard Updates - February 2004

11.1 - Pile Details (insert sheets - none)

  • Show CIP and HP welding details.
  • Change all reference to 12" dia. cast in place piling to 12 3/4".  A minimal 12 inch diameter CIP pipe pile actually has an inside diameter of 12 inches and an outside diameter of 12.75".
  • Add table for available standard wall thickness for all pile sizes.
  • Add to notes: "Grinding may be used in lieu of backgouging."

12.1 - Abutment Type A1 (insert sheets - none)

  • Girder Span with Semi Expansion Seat - Change 3/4" cork note to read: 3/4" Cork filler on vertical beam seat faces that run parallel with girder."  Cork should not be applied to back face of beam seats.

12.2 - Abutment Type A1 (insert sheets - none)

  • Add note to top of wing "Finish Horizontal Surfaces Not Covered By Parapet".  The area not covered by the parapet needs to be finished, placed at the proper elevation, and with appropriate slopes because it is not covered by the parapet transition.

12.3 - Abutment Type A3 (insert sheets - none)

  • Plan View - Add "or laminated elastomeric bearing" to "bearing pad" call out.

12.4 - Abutment Type A3 (insert sheets - none)

  • Add note to top of wing "Finish Horizontal Surfaces Not Covered By Parapet".  The area not covered by the parapet needs to be finished, placed at the proper elevation, and with appropriate slopes because it is not covered by the parapet transition.

12.6 - Abutment A4 Pile Footing (insert sheets - none)

  • Add note to top of wing "Finish Horizontal Surfaces Not Covered By Parapet".  The area not covered by the parapet needs to be finished, placed at the proper elevation, and with appropriate slopes because it is not covered by the parapet transition.

12.7 - Details For Wings Parallel to A1 Abutment Centerline (insert sheets - none)

  • Wing Elevation - Change name plate note to: "name plate (only for Type "F", "W", "M", or Timber Railing as shown on standard 30.23).
  • Section A-A - Add note symbol to const. joint note.
  • Add note: "When timber railing is used per standard 31.23 ....."

    Updates to accommodate new timber railing standard.

13.1 - Multi-Columned Piers (insert sheets - none)

  • Plan View - Add "or laminated elastomeric bearing" to "steel masonry plate" call out.

19.3 - 45" Pretensioned Girder Details (insert sheets - g45)

  • Designer Notes - Add to first sentence: "and for 0.6" dia. strands the max. is 6.

    Fabricator can accommodate up to six - 0.6
    " dia. draped stands.  Add 0.6" dia. strand back to standard.

19.11 - 45" Pretensioned Girder Design Data (insert sheets - g45.dgn)

  • Make additions to standard to allow for 0.6" dia. draped strands.
  • Add note to 38 strand pattern: "0.5" dia. stands only."

    Fabricator can accommodate up to six - 0.6
    " dia. draped stands.  Add 0.6" dia. strand back to standard.

19.22 - 72W" Pretensioned Girder Design data (insert sheets - g72Wdet)

  • Strand Patterns For Draped Strands - Remove 54 & 56 strand patterns.

24.2 - Plate Girder Details (insert sheets - none)

  • Shear Conn. Details - Remove "shop or" from first line of note.  Shop welded studs are not permitted for safety reasons.  Studs should be field welded only.

24.3 - Plate Girder Diaphragms and Cross Frames (insert sheets - none)

  • Change minimum dimension from top of bottom flange to bottom of bottom diaphragm member from 8" to 4".   Eight-inch minimum was required to provide room for lower lateral system below diaphragms.  Since lower laterals are rarely used, it was decided to decrease the minimum to 4".

24.4 -End Diaphragms (insert sheets - none)

  • Change minimum dimension from top of bottom flange to bottom of bottom diaphragm member from 8" to 4".   Eight-inch minimum was required to provide room for lower lateral system below diaphragms.  Since lower laterals are rarely used, it was decided to decrease the minimum to 4".
  • Make holes in End Diaph. Vertically Slotted on skews > 15◦.  Requested by erectors.

24.6 - Rolled Girder Diaphragms (insert sheets - none)

  • Change minimum dimension from top of bottom flange to bottom of bottom diaphragm member from 6" to 4".  Six-inch minimum was required to provide room for lower lateral system below diaphragms.  Since lower laterals are rarely used, it was decided to decrease the minimum to 4".

27.6 - Hold Down Devices (insert sheets - brtflon)

  • Add to notes:

    All material for bearings including shims but excluding pintles, anchor bolts, nuts, washers and pins shall conform to A.S.T.M. A709 grade 50W.

    All anchor bolts, nuts and washers shall conform to A.S.T.M. A709 grade 36 or material of equivalent yield strength and elongation. 

    Steel pintles shall conform to A.S.T.M. A449 or material of equivalent yield strength and elongation.


27.7 -  Elastomeric Bearing For Prestressed Concrete Girders (insert sheets - brelaspg)

  • Add Clearance Diagram.
  • End View - 54W" and 72W" girders require eight, 5/8 inch studs.  Change note to reflect additional studs for 54W" and 72W".

28.1 - Strip Seal Expansion Joint Details (insert sheets - jt400ss)

  • Legend, note 1 - change 40° to 45º.  Change to be consistent with bridge manual. 

29.1 - Floor Drain Type "GC" (insert sheets - draingc-in)

  • Section A2 - Change dimension from bottom of the girder to the bracket from 1'-0" to "Varies".  Add note to locate holes to avoid draped strands.

29.2 - Floor Drain Type "H" (insert sheets - none)

  • Section A2 - Change dimension from bottom of the girder to the bracket from 1'-0" to "Varies".  Add note to locate holes to avoid draped strands.

30.10 - Parapet Footing (insert sheets - lfdec, pptcfse)

  • Elevation View: Add note as shown on insert sheet.  "Steel trowel top surface ....."
  • Section Thru Parapet on Bridge:  Change fence heights from 42", 48" and 60" to 48", 60", and 72".  Change to match available sizes in standard bid items.

30.11 - Chain Link Fence Details (insert sheets - railchan)

  • On the "Base Plate" detail, and the "Post Attachment" detail, show 3 ½" dia. Sleeve, 2" dia. Line Posts, Or 2 ½" dia. End Posts".
  • On "Detail A" show 2" dia. Line Posts, Or 2 ½" Dia. End Posts".

Detail should also cover end posts which are 2 ½" in diameter.  3 ½" diameter sleeve will work for both 2" and 2 ½" diameter posts.


30.12 - Sloped Face Parapet 'LF' (insert sheets - lfdec, lfwin)

  • Change R503 bar from 4'-6" to 4'-7".

30.13 - Sloped Face Parapet 'HF' (insert sheets - hfdec, hfwin)

  • Inside and Outside Elevation views - Change "End of wing or deck" to "End of wing or B.F. of abut."
  • Change R503 bar from 4'-6" to 4'-7".

30.14 - Lighting Detail (insert sheets - none)

  • Update standard to show conduit running thru parapet rather than in deck.
  • Add junction box.

30.15 - Ornamental Protective Screening (insert sheets - none)

  • Notes: Add to last paragraph: "Paint over galvanizing with approved tie coat and topcoat."

30.16 - Tubular Steel Railing Type "M" (insert sheets - railm)

  • General Notes: Change note #10 to read: "When required, all material except anchorage detail (no. 3 & 4) shall be painted over galvanizing with approved tie coat and top coat."

30.20 - Sloped Face Parapet "51F" (insert sheets - 51f)

  • Revise to show approach median barrier.

30.21 -  Light Std., Junction Box, & Exp. Fitting For "LF/HF" Para. (insert sheets - not yet created)
